What is a Load Moment Indicator?

A Load Moment Indicator (LMI), also known as a Rated Capacity Limiter (RCL) or Rated Capacity Indicator (RCI), is an electronic safety system installed on mobile cranes, tower cranes, excavators, and manlifts. It continuously monitors the critical parameters that determine safe lifting operation: load weight, boom angle, boom length, radius, and the actual rated capacity at the current configuration.

Why LMI is Mandatory for ARAMCO Operations

Saudi Aramco's lifting operations standard requires all mobile cranes operating within Aramco facilities to be equipped with a functioning, calibrated LMI system. This is not merely a recommendation – it is a hard stop condition. Cranes without a properly functioning LMI will not be permitted to operate.

EN 13849 vs. AS 1418.5 — What the Two Standards Actually Cover

EN 13849 is a functional-safety standard: it governs how the LMI's safety-related control circuitry must be designed so that a single component failure doesn't silently disable the overload protection. AS 1418.5 is a crane-specific design standard that defines the rated-capacity limiting behaviour itself — at what load percentage warnings must trigger, and at what point motion must be automatically restricted. Together, they mean an LMI isn't just an accurate load gauge; it's a system engineered so the safety function keeps working even when something inside it fails.

How Often Should an LMI System Be Calibrated?

Load cells and angle sensors drift with vibration, temperature cycling, and mechanical wear, so a "set and forget" LMI is a false sense of security. As a baseline, SNTech recommends calibration verification at commissioning, after any boom or rigging configuration change, and at minimum every six months thereafter — more frequently for cranes working in Saudi Arabia's extreme summer heat, where thermal cycling accelerates sensor drift. What Happens When the Rated Load Is Approached

SNTech's LMI systems issue an audible and visual warning at 90% of rated capacity, giving the operator time to stop the lift before it becomes unsafe. At 100%, the system automatically restricts further boom extension or hoisting motion — the crane physically cannot complete a lift that would exceed its rated capacity at the current configuration. This two-stage warning-then-restriction design is what distinguishes a compliant LMI from a simple overload alarm.

Operator Training Still Matters

An LMI protects against overload, but it doesn't replace correctly trained crane operators — SNTech's deployment includes on-site operator briefing on how the 7" colour touchscreen display communicates load percentage, boom angle, and remaining safe working radius in real time, so the system becomes a working tool rather than a black box that just stops the crane unexpectedly.

Which LMI Variant Fits Which Machine?

An LMI built for a tower crane won't transfer directly to an excavator, because the physics of what makes each machine unstable are different. SNTech's LMI-CR range is built for lattice-boom, telescopic, and tower cranes, with load accuracy of ±1%, boom-angle sensing to ±0.1°, and anti-two-block protection — the classification most closely tied to the classic "rated capacity" definition. LMI-EX, for hydraulic excavators and material handlers, instead calculates real-time stability margin as the machine slews and extends, because an excavator's tip-over risk changes continuously with boom, stick, and bucket position rather than being a single static rated-load table. A Common Mistake: Treating LMI as a One-Time Purchase

Because an LMI kit is specified per machine type at commissioning, some operators treat the initial install as the end of the job. In practice, any change to a crane's configuration — a different jib length, an added counterweight, a rigging change — shifts the load chart the LMI is validating against, and the system needs its load-chart selection re-verified whenever that happens.
